A Journey to the Centre of the Earth, by Jules Verne, was first published in 1864. Professor Lidenbrock, returning home to Hamburg with a mysterious Icelandic manuscript, discovers a coded message written in runic script. Obsessed with cracking the code, he locks himself, his maid, and Axel his nephew in the house until the mystery is discovered. It is Axel who makes the breakthrough, but the uninspired nephew is exasperated as his uncle hurriedly drags him along to Iceland. Together with their Icelander guide Hans Bjelke, they begin a fantastic adventure in the craters of the icy mountain Snæfell that has been told and re-told to many generations.
