Anne of Avonlea, by Lucy Maud Montgomery, was published in 1909 and continues where Anne of Green Gables has left off. Having put off college and the Avery Scholarship to help Marilla on the farm, Anne begins her first term teaching at the Avonlea school. Anne's adventures and penchant for getting into silly scrapes begin as she is introduced to Mr. Harrison and his foul-mouthed parrot as well as the twins Davy and Dora. Anne's relationship with Avonlea and her friends, Diana and Gilbert, deepen as she still considers if and when she may go away to college.
