The Mysterious Island, by Jules Verne, was first published in 1874. The sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas begins during the American Civil war, where a rag-tag group of five northern prisoners escape by means of balloon. Many days of traveling in troubling weather, they crash land on an island they come to name "Lincoln Island" in honor of President Lincoln. As the colonists struggle to survive, many inexplicable but beneficial mysteries occur along the way that baffle their minds and escalate their fears that something very powerful is also occupying the mysterious island.
