The Cricket on the Hearth, by Charles Dickens, was first published in 1845. This heartwarming story follows the life of John Peerybingle and his wife Dot. Their lives are disrupted by a mysterious visitor while they work through their relationships with Caleb Plummer, a poor toymaker who works for the miserly Mr. Tackleton. The cricket constantly chirps on the Perrybingle hearth, acting as a sort of guardian angel of the household. Check out the other Dickens Christmas classics: A Christmas Carol, The Chimes, The Battle of Life, The Haunted Man and the Ghost’s Bargain.
