Robinson Crusoe in Words of One Syllable, adapted from Daniel Defoe’s classic by Lucy Aikin, was published in 1867. Crusoe’s bad sailing luck is legendary.  After two disastrous voyages he finally lands in Brazil and establishes a plantation.  On his journey to Africa his voyage again ends in trouble as he is shipwrecked and marooned on what he calls “The Island of Despair”. Thus begins one of the most memorable stories of survival and self-discovery as Crusoe, his dog, and two cats begin a new life. Lucy Aikin transcribed the original work into words of only one syllable that makes this classic accessible to those learning to read as well as those who want a clearer representation of the timeless story.
