Persuasion, by Jane Austen, was formally published in 1817 and was her last completed novel. Persuasion is loosely connected to another of Jane Austen's novels, Northanger Abbey, and is set partly in Bath, England. Over eight years before the story commences, Anne Elliot was convinced by her boorish relatives to reject the proposal of a young naval officer, Frederick Wentworth, due to his low standing and poor estate. The story opens when a 27 year old Anne re-encounters the rejected Frederick, now a successful captain, who declares he is ready to marry any appealing young woman except Anne Elliot.
