Otto of the Silver Hand, written and illustrated by Howard Pyle, was first published in 1888. Violence and peace clash in Germany during the Dark Ages. Otto, whose mother dies in child birth, is the son of a robber warlord named Baron Conrad. After spending the first 11 years of his life in a monastery, Otto's violent father withdraws him to live in Castle Drachenhausen (German for "Dragon's House") and into a world of fighting and feud. Facing suffering and pain in the ensuing saga, Otto must persevere through many trials to stay on the path of peace and respectability.
