The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, by Charles Dickens, was published in complete form in 1839 and was Dickens' third novel. In Dickens' own words this is the "Faithful Account of the Fortunes, Misfortunes, Uprisings, Downfallings and Complete Career of the Nickelby Family". The story opens as Nicholas' father dies suddenly after making a bad investment and losing all his money. Nicholas, his mother, and sister Kate must leave their comfortable home to live with Nicholas' uncle Ralph. Ralph continually antagonizes Nicholas as he struggles to define himself and prove his worth.
