Arthur Clennam has been living with his father in China for twenty years and is now returning to London after his father's death. He received a watch with a mysterious note from his father on his deathbed, his father murmuring "your mother". Arthur assumes the watch is intended for Mrs. Clennam, his mother. Or is she? An intricate plot of untold histories unfolds as the Dorrit and Clennam families intertwine.
